1. What Is News?

"News" is one of those words we use every day without stopping to consider what it truly means. We scroll through it, we watch and listen to it, sometimes even complain about it, but if someone asked, "What actually is news?" most of us would have to stop and think for a second. The way I see it, news is basically information that's timely and that matters to people. It isn't just random facts, it's the stuff happening in the world that affects us, interests us, or surprises us enough that we want to know about it.

What makes something newsworthy usually comes down to a few things. If it just happened, it's more likely to be considered news. If it's happening close to home, it hits harder than something far away. Stories that affect a lot of people, like a change in college tuition, tend to be bigger than ones that only matter to a small group. If someone famous or powerful is involved, people pay attention, and if there is conflict or controversy, that usually grabs headlines too. Even something completely unusual or weird can count as news just because it stands out.

This is a chart I found made by the Pew Research Center, showing the consumption of different kinds of news through the social media app Facebook. 30% Of Facebook Users Are Consuming News

The reason we care about news isn't only because we want to know what's going on. It also helps us make sense of the world, make decisions, and sometimes even connect with each other. At the same time, what counts as "news" can change depending on who's watching. A story that's important in one community may not matter much in another. And now, with social media, it's even harder to draw the line between actual reporting and people's opinions.

So when it comes down to it, news is information that's timely, relevant, and meaningful. It is what informs us, affects us, or just grabs our attention. For me, the real challenge in reporting and writing isn't just about putting words on a page, although I do find it to be an obstacle; it's about figuring out what really matters to people and why.
