More than ten years after Malaysia Airlines Flight 370 disappeared, Malaysia’s transport ministry has announced that the deep-sea search will resume later this month. The effort will be led by Ocean Infinity, a Texas-based marine robotics company that signed a new “no-find, no-fee” deal with the Malaysian government in March. While it’s unclear whether the company has new evidence about the plane’s location, Ocean Infinity says its technology has significantly improved since its unsuccessful 2018 search and that experts have helped narrow down the most likely crash area. Earlier this year, the firm began scanning a new 15,000-square-kilometer section of the Indian Ocean, but weather forced them to pause the mission in April. They will receive $70 million only if wreckage is found.
Malaysia Airlines Flight 370 vanished on March 8, 2014, during a flight from Kuala Lumpur to Beijing with 239 people on board. Despite years of multinational searches, only small pieces of debris have ever been recovered, leaving the disappearance one of aviation’s biggest mysteries. Ocean Infinity’s renewed mission offers a rare glimmer of hope that answers may finally be found.
