20. Wild Card

For my wild card blog, I am going to take this opportunity to talk about Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Incorporated, better known as Nupes. If you know me, you already know why, my brother is a proud member, so I’ve had a front row seat to the energy, the history, and honestly, the whole vibe of this organization. And let me just say, the Kappas don't play. At all.

So what is Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Incorporated? Kappa Alpha Psi was founded on January 5, 1911, at Indiana University by ten visionary young African American men. And that alone was a huge deal because, at the time, the campus environment was not welcoming to African American students. The founders created the fraternity as a space for unity, academic support, leadership, and brotherhood, basically a safe space where Black men could uplift each other at a time when the world around them wasn’t trying to. That mission never faded. Over a century later, the frat is still rooted in achievement, service, and empowering its members to level up in every part of life.

One thing about Kappa Alpha Psi, you’re going to feel their presence. They have this confidence, this sharpness, this “we’re here, and we’re handling business” kind of aura. Whether they’re out doing community service, mentoring younger students, or stepping out at events, Kappas know how to represent themselves and their letters. And listen, if you’ve ever seen them hit that shoulder shimmy? Yeah. You already know. There’s a reason people stop and stare.

A lot of people only know Greek organizations for the parties or the strolls, but Kappa Alpha Psi is heavy on purpose. Their motto is “Achievement in Every Field of Human Endeavor,” and they really do push that. Members are expected to aim high, academically, professionally, and in service. They’re also big on giving back. Programs like Guide Right and Kappa League mentor young men, especially Black youth, and help them prepare for college, leadership, and life. It’s not just a vibe thing, there’s real impact behind the name.

Because my brother is in Kappa Alpha Psi, I’ve seen the hard work and dedication he's put in that most people don't. I’ve seen the late nights, the studying, the bonds he has with his frat, and the pride that comes with earning those letters. It’s not just a social club, it really is a brotherhood. And the way they show up for each other is honestly inspiring. Even as someone who’s not Greek, I’ve gained a new level of respect for how much dedication goes into being part of a Black Greek organization. There’s tradition, history, responsibility, and a lot of heart behind it. And most people forget that this fraternity is not just about these brothers being "pretty boys" and taking someone's girl, it is a part of Black history, just like every fraternity and sorority in the Divine 9.

Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc. is more than the canes, the strolls, and the iconic crimson and cream. It’s a historical powerhouse built on achievement, unity, and leadership. And from what I’ve seen up close, the brotherhood is real, and it changes lives. So yeah, if I were going to pick anything for my wild card blog, choosing the Kappas just made sense. They’re bold, they’re committed, they’re historic, and they’ve built a legacy that’s still going strong today.
