On September 30, 2025, the Drew County Sheriff's Office responded to reports of suspects breaking into vehicles at a local apartment complex. What started as a possible break-in quickly turned dangerous when one of the suspects began shooting at residents who were standing on a balcony.
After collecting evidence and interviewing witnesses, investigators identified 23-year-old ZyTavious Chavis of Wilmer as a suspect. He was arrested on October 3, 2025, and charged with aggravated assault, two counts of breaking or entering, and terroristic act.
What makes this case stand out is that Chavis was already out on bond for a separate shooting earlier this year. Back on July 20, 2025, he was accused of shooting someone in a Bradley County incident. His bond in that case was originally set at $200,000 but later reduced to $20,000, and he was placed on an ankle monitor.
Due to his previous violent charges and what officials called a "likelihood of re-offending," Judge Crew Puryear set Chavis's new bond at $750,000 for the Drew County charges.
Sheriff Tim Nichols said that the investigation is still ongoing as deputies continue to gather information about other people who may have been involved. He also added that more arrests are expected soon.
Anyone with information about the case is encouraged to contact Lt. Rick Harvey or Sheriff Tim Nichols at the Drew County Sheriff's Office.
